Homelessness Community
Action Project

This project centers on community-based research into issues of homelessness and precarious housing, undertaken in collaboration with existing service organizations.

The project brought together local organizations, community workers, and individuals with lived experience to build capacity and improve coordination across the region. Key activities included a series of community partner meetings to strengthen referral networks and knowledge sharing, a social and print media awareness campaign to reduce stigma and deepen community understanding of homelessness, and the creation of the Homelessness Action Initiative Package, a community resource booklet with local service listings and educational materials, distributed at the public library, shelters, the food bank, and partner organization centres.

Through this work, the project uncovered important insights about the largely invisible nature of homelessness in Fort Nelson, where most people experiencing precarious housing are couch surfing, staying with family, or living in motels. Service gaps identified include the absence of centralized support, limited mental health and addiction resources, and a lack of local homelessness-specific data.

This project has laid the groundwork for continued collaboration and future efforts to strengthen local supports, improve data collection, and build solutions that reflect the realities of northern rural communities.
